Bali Trip 2014: Day 9: Chillin’ Sanur

What really Happens In Bali?  Well if you believe TV and mainstream media it is nothing but drinking and crazy risk taking.  Well here is our version – stay tuned for our quick 2 week escape from Australia heading over to Bali and Kuala Lumpur.

Today is what I like to call – unplanned chilltime day – nothing planned just taking life as it comes as we will see what happens.

Todays Program:

  • Food
  • Shopping
  • Massage
  • Food

*Yep I am building up to at least 2 massage treatments a day – don’t judge me – I have an addiction.

Ok so early admission here – today was such a chilled day we barely took any photos – sorry! I will try to keep it as brief as possible to avoid you getting too border without pictures.

We had breakfast at the hotel this morning, the breakfast menu is not extensive but it is more than sufficient to fuel you up till lunch – we dinned on Fried Egg on Toast, Fruit, Coffee and Juice – more than enough.

First up was a bit of shopping – we went for an energetic walk down all the way to South Sanur….I know what a walk… I know online there is a real South vs. North rivalry with both sides thinking their part of Sanur is the best – me well I am in the North camp but there are some really cool little restaurants and shops down the South so do make a trip down there.

We went to Utama Spicehttp://www.utamaspicebali.com/ – If you have never tried this stuff make a point of heading into one of their stores to stock up, we always pick up a few gifts for friends and family as well as a range of stuff for ourselves.  All their products are 100% natural and I can especially recommend the BeGoneBug Spray– really handy stuff that doesn’t smell like a petrochemical factory.  The Lib Balm is also good (so I am told), and we can also recommend the soaps.  They have two main shops on on Jl Monkey Forest in Ubud and the other on Jl Danau Poso in Sanur.

Next we jumped a Bemo back to the North – the Bemo’s are these lovely little vans that cruise up and down the main street of Sanur and you can flag them down.  Not particularly OH&S compliant – but on the main street its not like you will make much speed.  Still not 100% sure on the price, I made the mistake of having a brief conversation with the driver in Indonesian which made him think I was fluent enough to understand the price in Rupiah – anyway I flicked him 20,000 and he seemed happy with that.

Massage Time

Up at Jalan Danau Toba – near the Jl Pantai Sindu intersection is a lovely little massage place called Good Massage and we figured – with a name like that it must be good! So we stopped in to get a nice relaxing hour of Foot Reflexology.  Wow amazing work – but as you know Foot Reflexology is a delicate balance between relaxation and pure white knuckle terror! It was seriously painful but it did us the world of good. (Rp 140k for 2x 1hr).

Food Time

All that massage had left us both hungry so we waddled down the road and decided on some Lunch at the Sanur Beach Market Restaurant.  The weather was stunning today so it was really relaxing sitting out on the sand under the shade sail enjoying the wonderful Sanur day.

And me – well I can’t pass up a nice rack of Pork Ribs.  Plus Mum will be happy to see me eating my Vegetables.

They were also setting up the beach for a number of weddings that they were hosting there the next couple of nights.  Looked like a really great setting to get married – – – – must remember that for my second wedding…..

Insert – ubiquitous shot of Beer bottle in cooler with Sanur beach in the background.

Shopping

Lunch over we decided to head down the beach path south a little bit.  Now at this point I will remind you of my comment yesterday about engaging with the Sanur Market Ladies – well my lovely wife got chatty with a couple and then felt guilty about not buying anything so ended up in both their stores buying something from each.  I also can appreciate how hard it is to make a sale in there, those markets are an absolute maze filled to the brim with stores.

So we ended up with:

  • 1 Dress & 1 Sarong – Rp 80,000
  • 1 Pair of Bali Pants – Rp 55,000
  • 1 Pair of Long Bali Pants – Rp 65,000

Took the long walk back to the hotel to dump our possessions.

Spa Time

Yep – 2nd spa treatment for the day – although in fairness the first one was Foot Reflexology – and that totally doesn’t count.  We had made an appointment earlier this morning for Koa Boutique & Spa – this place was pretty flash but definitely make an appointment as they only have 3 treatment rooms and get booked out pretty quick.

It is located on Jl Danau Tamblingan just across the road from the Tamukami.

It is not the cheapest Spa in town but they do use some amazing products including the Sukin Organic range for their facials.  I had a 1 hr Balinese Massage (Rp. 90k) and my wife had the 1 hr Facial (Rp 120k).  Both treatments were amazing and I can definitely recommend.  From talking to them apparently they are looking at expanding to the building behind them which will give them much more room.

After our spa it was back to the hotel – via laundry to pick up washing – and get refreshed for dinner.

Dinner Time

We headed back to the beach for dinner and ended up at the Beach Cafe.  Neither of us were particularly hungry – I guess such a busy day and all….

The setting is quite nice on the beach – next to the lovely little Reggae Bar (so got to enjoy their lovely music styling’s).

IMG_3200

First up we grabbed some Quesadillas – they were a nice entree – they have a number of good little tapas options if you are not particularly hungry.

IMG_3199

Next up beer battered shrimp – sorry the picture doesn’t do it justice – they were tasty – although probably a smidgen too much batter.

IMG_3202

Beef Tacos – Sorry that picture makes them look really terrible but they were actually pretty tasty – just a little too much lettuce.

And my “Light” choice for dinner – Beer Burger with chips.

All up for dinner including some dessert and drinks it came to Rp450k which wasn’t particularly cheap.  Probably not my No.1 choice for a dinner but I would definitely come back for a lunch/tapas again if we just want a light meal.

So that was it for the nice – nicely chilled out day didn’t get up to much – don’t want to give you too many spoilers but tomorrow is going to be much the same!
